How the Civil Service Alpha Pension Works
Plain answers to the questions people ask most about the alpha pension. Figures are for the 2026/27 scheme year.
Last checked: 7 October 2026, against the Civil Service Pension Scheme. This is an independent guide, not official advice: the scheme's own booklet and your statement are what count.
How much does the Civil Service contribute to my pension?
For April 2024 to March 2027 the employer contribution rate is 28.97% of pensionable pay, the same for every salary band (Employer Pension Notice 698). Alpha is a defined benefit scheme, so that percentage is what your employer pays towards providing the pension the scheme promises. It is not a personal pot with your name on it: what you receive is set by the 2.32% rule below.
How much do I pay?
Your own contribution depends on your pensionable pay. The salary thresholds are reviewed each April; these are the 2026/27 scheme year figures.
| Pensionable pay | You pay |
|---|---|
| Up to £36,199 | 4.60% |
| £36,200 to £56,000 | 5.45% |
| £56,001 to £150,000 | 7.35% |
| £150,001 and above | 8.05% |
How is my alpha pension worked out?
Each scheme year you build a pension worth 2.32% of that year's pensionable earnings. On a salary of £40,000, that is £928 of annual pension for the year (£40,000 × 2.32%). Your pension is the total of every year you have built up, which is why alpha is called a career average scheme.
How much pension will I have after 20, 30 or 40 years?
The table shows the pension built up on a constant salary at 2.32% a year. It is a rough guide, not a forecast: it ignores pay rises, the April adjustment below, any earlier pension scheme, tax and early or late retirement. If your pay keeps pace with inflation it is a fair guide in today's money.
| Salary | After 20 years | After 30 years | After 40 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| £30,000 | £13,920 a year | £20,880 a year | £27,840 a year |
| £40,000 | £18,560 a year | £27,840 a year | £37,120 a year |
| £50,000 | £23,200 a year | £34,800 a year | £46,400 a year |
| £60,000 | £27,840 a year | £41,760 a year | £55,680 a year |

What is the annual adjustment to my alpha pension?
Each April the pension you have already built up is increased in line with CPI inflation measured in the previous September. That keeps its buying power while you are still working, and if you leave and keep a deferred pension. CPI for September 2025 was 3.8%, which set the adjustment from April 2026.
When can I take my alpha pension?
The normal pension age for alpha is your State Pension age. You can usually claim earlier, but the pension is then paid at a reduced rate; the scheme publishes the exact reductions, so check your statement or the scheme website rather than relying on a rule of thumb.
What is the average Civil Service pension?
There is no single figure worth quoting. It depends on your pay, how many years you pay in and any earlier scheme membership. The table above shows how the 2.32% rule works out for common salaries and career lengths.
