Higher Toxicologist
The Higher Toxicologist works within the General Toxicology and Biomonitoring programme to provide expert advice on the health effects of chemicals in drinking water, contaminated land, and waste processes. Day to day, you will critically assess toxicity data, support chemical risk assessments, and help communicate specialised advice to colleagues and the public. You will also contribute to scientific content for online resources such as the UK Health Security Agency Compendium of Chemical Hazards. Additionally, you may provide advice and support during contamination incidents involving chemicals and participate in incident response activities.

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in toxicology or equivalent experience
- Awareness of broad public health and environmental issues
- Clear communicator with excellent writing and presentation skills
- Ability to critically assess literature and chemical toxicity data
- Ability to plan work, meet deadlines, and build working relationships
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree or qualification in relevant subject such as toxicology
Nationality requirements
Open to UK, Irish, Commonwealth, EU and Turkish nationals with appropriate right to work or EUSS status.
Selection process
Assessment involves a competency-based application form and supporting statement, followed by a face-to-face interview with a presentation and written assessment.
