Inspector of Marine Accidents (Naval Architect)
You will work as an Inspector of Marine Accidents specialising in naval architecture within the Marine Accident Investigation Branch of the Department for Transport. Day to day, you will deploy to accident sites worldwide, lead investigations, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and write detailed technical reports and safety recommendations. You will also provide specialist in-house naval architecture expertise and represent the branch at industry working groups to improve maritime safety. This varied role involves rotating on-call duties, physical deployments in challenging environments, and collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications
- BEng/BSc, or higher, degree in Naval Architecture or Ship Science
- Chartered status as a naval architect
- A full driving licence valid in the UK
Nationality requirements
Open to UK, Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth, EU/EEA/Swiss nationals with settled/pre-settled status, and qualifying Turkish nationals.
Selection process
The sift will take place during week commencing 05/10/2026. Interviews will take place week commencing 09/11/2026 in person at the Southampton office.
